Why You Want Landscapes in your Wedding Gallery
Something I find myself always photographing is the landscapes and environments of our sessions. Now, I had no idea that I did this until I was editing Jess and John’s wedding at Overlook lodge at Bear Mountain (gorgeous venue by the way). I had SO many photographs of the Bear Mountain sunset, I was so curious about it myself that I ventured into past sessions to see how often I did this! It actually was pretty often, so I went back to the basics, and psychoanalyzed myself.
The first thing my photography professors told me in college was to figure out what kept me up at night. Figuring that out didn’t take too much time. I began focusing on my family, from things I used to feel prideful about and the people I lost.
This question was the beginning of my discovering on what photography can really do.
I was always drawn to documenting, but in a way it turned into “preserving”.
Preserving loved ones; the way they dressed, the way they sat or stood, the wrinkles on their face. You see the one thing that kept me up at night was the regret of not being present with my family and friends. That one day they would be gone and I would forget their laugh, smile, dimples, or sun spots. Until I watched Cosmos, I talk about this in my about me, but to put it into simple terms. Photography is a form of time travel, I can hold that photograph of my father hugging me, where we are both fully present in, and all of sudden I can feel his arms around me again. It was a life changing discovery for me and I knew I wanted to capture and share these kinds of moments with you.
So thats why portraits are so important, but landscapes can be extraordinary in their own way. Adding in landscapes, I am able to capture the exact view you saw. Such as the crowd right before you walked down the aisle, the sunset when you sat and melted into your now husband’s chest, the church ceilings when you said “I Do”, the set up of your Christmas decorations at your first home together.
My job as your photographer is to capture everything about your day, and yes I think that should always include some landscapes of your venue, home, or adventure! My goal as your photographer is for you to be present, not to be distracted or worried about the little things, and for you to hopefully forget I am even there. I’m there to document you, to embody the sun, rain clouds or forest, but more importantly your loved ones and all your surroundings.
